4th Grade takes the Cake!

For the next 4th grade artist I chose Wayne Theibaud and his cakes.  Who wouldn't love to draw and color a layer cake.  My kids loved this project in oil pastels, it probably didn't hurt that I brought in cake to share with them.  How can you draw cake without wanting a piece??

More String Art

I know it feels like it never ends, but it takes awhile for 25 people to all finish the same project.

O'Keefe in Art 1

Usually this time of year I have Art 1 recreate Grant Wood's  "American Gothic", but I was bored with that project so I went looking for another great American Artist.  That is when I decided Georgia O'Keefe would be a great choice.

We made these large scale flower drawings in chalk.  So it was a quick project, but as you can see they are beautiful.

4th grade van gogh's

For the 4th grade artist unit, we had to study Van Gogh's Starry Night.  This is one of my favorite paintings.  I love the colors and swirls and the violence of the sky with the calmness of the village.  The kids found everything that I wanted them to see when we VTSed the painting.  (Visual thinking stratagies).

But... I didn't want to just repaint starry night.  I wanted them to take his inspiration and make our own pictures.  So we talked about places that you could go or draw.  Then we drew a large object on the left side of the picture just like van gogh's tree, and we drew some hills with a quiet scene on the right side, like his village and hills.

Most of the kids picked a tropical destination, but a few picked the mountains or a park or one of my favorites which is the icebergs in sunset.

Child of an art teacher

You always hope that your children will get your talents for art and creativity, but sadly my oldest son has not.  I love him dearly, but I need to convince him to stay in band because he (and I) will have a very rough time in high school if he has to take my class.

It is very hard to give out a new project and see that everyone is doing great, and the only one struggling (and I mean struggling) is the art teacher's kid.

Sorry Chase.

Never miss a Tuesday

Well after a couple of crazy weeks, I have one third grade class that is way ahead of all the others because you never miss a Tuesday.  So last week I had them do these simple water reflections with oil pastels.

Tissue paper????

Every now and then I wonder what the art teacher before me did for projects.  This thought doesn't really occur to me except when I open my tissue paper cupboard.  I have been teaching at this school for 11 years, and in that time I have NEVER had to order tissue paper.

This might not seem weird until you realize that all of my classes  (18 of them) use tissue paper at least once a year, some more.  Or the fact that 2 years ago I actually gave my sculpture class the assignment to make authentic pinatas using tissue paper squares.  (We made 20 pinatas.)

Today I decided to organize that cupboard and I still found half a box of unopened tissue paper, plus enough loose stuff to probably cover the football field.

So again I ask....What did he do with all of the tissue paper??
