Spheres

I pulled this project out of a School Arts magazine years ago.  In fact, I had students paint this project on the wall almost 10 years ago if that helps narrow the year I found it.

I have done this project with 7th grade ever since then.  I like how the project teaches perspective and can let them be creative with parts of the design.  I let them either paint it or use colored pencils.  This year I was not impressed with any of my painters.  Maybe my next six week class will have steadier hands and  more patience.

4pt. Perspective Rooms

Several years ago I took a class from a local artist, Dick Termes.  He makes these amazing spheres known as Termespheres that involve a process that he calls 6pt. perspective.  What he does is paints scenes and images on these really large plastic spheres, but when they spin in front of you it is like you are standing in a room and it is spinning around you.  They are almost dizzying, but they are really cool.

Well I have always done the 6pt perspective with my Art 1 class, but this year I decided to do a long narrow 4pt project.  That means that if you wrap the one side of the project around to the other side they will match up and make you feel like you are in that room.  It is a hard concept for the students to initially grasp, but in the end they get the idea and some of the projects come out pretty neat.

Colored Pencil Drawings

My High School Art 1 class has been working on using colored pencils to layer color.  They were given a stack of photographs from calendars and nature magazines (I personally love the pictures in Country magazine) and they were told to draw their image and then try to use colored pencils to create the image.  It took awhile to convince them that they could push pretty hard on the pencils and build up to darker colors. 

Did I mention I was mean and wouldn't let them use black colored pencils.  For some it was torcher not to have the easy way out.  But others rose up to the challenge and figured out that if you just put all of the colors together you can make a more interesting black then just a plain black colored pencil.

Overall this project went pretty quick.  They had about three days to make the 6x6 drawing.
